I think an important point to take away from that post on the KLIC thread is this one, "It seems many companies can get by fine with the efficiences and pad pitch of their older machines and the newer $1000 dollar machines are less wire bonder intensive."

KLIC is always assigned a lower valuation, because their tools get pushed out/canceled first and are least likely to be upgraded in hard times. You have to separate the required technology semi-equips(to improve costs) from the packagers. I think AMAT falls somewhere in the middle, but I'm not sure. Perhaps, BB could comment?
