"Here's the first positive reason I have heard for the PC makers to create a sub1-K market and that's to significantly hamper the growth of NC's."

Nicholas -
There's no reason why Compaq couldnt ship NC's - NC's are a threat only to Microsofts monopoly on desktop operating systems and the proprietary technology they are tying throughout their offerings - office runs only on windows, IE integrated with windows, Microsoft internet Mouse works only with IE, active X works only on windows NT, etc, etc. The sub 1k PC is a good example of Compaq and the other Microsoft Slaves cutting off their nose to spite their face while Microsoft laughs all the way to the bank - or next Senate hearing.
