Mike, there is no difference in the fuel cell itself, Ballard makes one type of fuel cell that can use many different fuels. What the fuel cell needs is hydrogen. Where the difference comes in is how you generate that hydrogen. The various fuels you mentioned can be reformed to generate hydrogen, which then is fed into the fuel cell.

With respect to the gasoline REFORMER you mentioned, what doesn't get a mention is that Arthur D. Little used both a Plug Power AND a Ballard fuel cell to demonstrate their reformer. A.D. Little has now set up a subsidiary to commercialize that reformer and sell it to others. The subs name is EPYX. Recently Ford and Mobil announced a joint venture to develop a gasoline reformer to be used in the Ballard/Daimler/Ford fuel cell development efforts. GM also has teamed up with Amoco and Exxon I believe to do the same thing. The reformer is just one piece of the entire balance of plant that auto makers must piece together, it's not really Ballard's focus.

The estimate I've seen for the upfront cost to provide methanol at a typical service station is about $30,000 per service station, which was quoted by Toyota's chairman.

Hope that helps.
