Simultaneous broadcast of TV and data signals -- DiviCom already provides equipment that can mix and transmit data with MPEG video.

'Datacasting' big at NAB

The big debate at NAB in Vegas this next week will be on how to
implement data broadcasting over digital TV. Intel will be pushing its vision,
while the Advanced TV Systems Committee struggles to nail down specs on
data encapsulation and interoperability, George Leopold & Junko Yoshida
write in EE Times.

As digital TV rolls out in the U.S. this fall, adding data, either associated with
a broadcast or independent of it, has become a major concern. The ATSC
has focused on setting standards for over-the-air terrestrial signals, but Intel
and others want to develop a spec that allows broadcasters to author a
"video plus data" application once and play it everywhere. Several kinds of
datacasting are likely to emerge over terrestrial, cable, and satellite systems
during the next year and no one wants to repeat what happened to Unix.
