My understanding is that as an NRI you can buy and sell Indian securities by opening a Rupee account in India. The big problem will be at tax time with Indian tax liability and IRS here. I am not an expert in this area and feel participating in Indian markets from here is cumbersome. There are a lot of good opportunities here.

A number of indian firms are working on being llisted as ADRs on the nasdaq and nyse. One of them is Infosys.
