I don't really have too much experience with new issues either...but from what I've heard...you supposedly have to be a "good" client to get at an IPO at an early price. I've heard brokerages get a certain amount of shares of new issues and usually allocate them to their more important clients. But some brokerages let you have access to their IPO's, such as DLJ. If you use DLJ, you can get some shares of the companies they bring public and a decent price. I'm not sure about Schwab...you might want to contact your broker and ask. Also maybe there is an IPO thread here on SI, where someone might be able to answer your questions better. Hope that helps...
