Here's a view of Altera's earnings. ALTERA*#: Altera has maintained its relatively flat sequential business guidance during the course of the quarter, but the first quarter estimate range is wider than normal. Our estimate is at the consensus. Since there appears to be little chance for a major earnings disappointment in first quarter results, it will probably be more important what the company says regarding the second quarter outlook than what is reported for the first quarter. We believe there is a reasonable chance that the company can resume sequential growth in the second quarter of 1998. We rate the stock 1H (Buy, High Risk).
