JDP, I meant to get back to you sooner ... anyone else think I've posted enough already?

What I wrote was: In fact, monitoring and life support equipment do not care about the date to function!

Many monitors allow the user to enter the date. This information is printed on a strip chart or other report. It is possible (the equipment I designed works fine) for some equipment to report the wrong date on the strip chart or report but the equipment will continue to monitor the patient's vital signs correctly.

As far as guaranteeing compliance; most medical equipment providers are very cautious. As you know (having worked for a medical company) they have extensive validation plans for every product they manufacturer and I'm sure they are waiting to complete their validations before making a blanket claim of compliance. As an example, in their SEC filing Marquette wrote: "Most products are currently compatible with the Year 2000." I think they are just being careful.

My objection is to the scare tactics about monitors and life support equipment not working on Jan 1, 00. From all of the people I've talked with about this issue, this is NOT true. Of course, someone might dig up an old monitor that fails and call me a liar ...

It will be interesting to read the SEC filings later this year.
Regards, Bill
