the numbers only tell of registered shareholders. A brokerage may represent thousands of shareholders(Clients)

Tim Walsh;

No that does not seem unusually low. don't forget 68% of cpq stock is owned by about 1400 funds. The remaining 32% of cpq stock is owned by the remaining 21,600 shareholders. Or put another way, if you pull out the institutions that own cpq there remains about 400,000,000 shares in the hands of 21,600 people or slightly less than 20,000 shares per shareholder. After you factor in the large number of shares held by employees and other insiders the picture makes sense.

Tim:

Majority of employees hold options and not the shares outright unless they bought on the open market. I don't think they would be registered as discreet holders as their shares are probably held in Company name as diluted Treasury Stock. Can anybody confirm this?
