DiviCom and Columbine JDS Partner to Provide Broadcasters New DTV Management System; Joint Offering Simplifies Transition to Digital
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1998--DiviCom Inc. (NASDAQ: CUBE), a leading provider of video compression systems, today announced a co-marketing relationship with Columbine JDS (NYSE:BGF) to offer a fully integrated management and control system for multichannel digital broadcasting targeted at U.S. broadcasters.
The new system, called TransMission Manager, was designed to give broadcasters the ability to manage and control all aspects of delivery of multiple digital channels and expand revenues by offering additional digital services. Station managers can save time and money by consolidating a range of functions including video compression, multiplexing, system control, traffic management, scheduling, bandwidth allocation, and on-air control.
TransMission Manager will be shown at NAB '98, April 6-9 at the DiviCom booth (No. 3568 at the Sands) and the CJDS booth (No. 10957 in the Convention Center).
TransMission Manager is composed of a number of subsystems built around CJDS' Digital Manager, the central transmission planning database module. DiviCom provides digital video encoding, multiplexing and the THESYS(TM) network management product family for digital network facilities. THESYS is composed of the System Controller SC20, the alarm manager, and bandwidth manager software modules. Other standard subsystems from CJDS included in TransMission Manager are the automation subsystem, the Synchronizer, and the System Information (SI) and Electronic Program Guide (EPG) generator.
After the video programs are compressed and multiplexed, scheduling and automation information is passed into the digital subsystem through THESYS, which provides the interface between the management provided by CJDS and DiviCom's digital functionality.
"The complexities of digital broadcasting have called for close cooperation between manufacturers to develop innovative systems," said Mike Oldham, vice president of sales and marketing for Columbine JDS. "With the combined expertise of DiviCom and Columbine JDS, broadcasters now have a solution to take them into the coming age of HDTV/DTV. In fact, no other vendor can offer as complete a solution as Transmission Manager."
For current CJDS customers, TransMission Manager interfaces to all CJDS traffic products and includes CJDS' established master control automation system, MCAS-III. TransMission Manager supports the ATSC standard for the planning and transmission of multiple digital television services. Station managers can continue to implement established business practices or systems, with the newly-added capabilities of monitoring, controlling, allocating bandwidth and automated redundancy switching of the digital equipment.
"DiviCom wants to help broadcasters make the transition to digital as seamless as possible," said Tom Lookabaugh, president of DiviCom. "With a proven track record in the broadcast industry, Columbine JDS is an ideal company for us to work with to deliver systems that save time and money. This integration effort merges our strengths in digital systems with those of CJDS."
Transmission Manager will be available for ordering at NAB '98.
