"Animal" is a man-made notion which certainly applies to our species using our definition. We have the most generalized and highly developed intellect of all the beings on this planet, IMO, and we should consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have that capacity, at least in part because we actually can consider ourselves.

I disagree with you about genetics, Godzilla. Man is a spiritual being, but animals may be also. The higher animals seem to love and teach their children, and are quite capable of emotions like joy, anger and fear. Some of them use tools, and communicate in complex languages. The elephants definitely mourn their dead. When we have done a little more research with apes, I am sure that we will have a clearer understanding of animal spirituality.

Genetics is just the study of what is inherited, and how that happens. It can apply to animals and humans.
