Digital to change broadcasting. Too bad Broadcasting isn't as big as the internet for advertising revenue. :-)...................

NBC, ABC and CBS all plan to air some high-definition programming in prime time. Fox probably will offer some high-definition broadcasts, but for now is focusing on broadcasting in standard digital -- a move that allows the company to offer multiple channels or services at the same time.

Fox and ABC will use a "progressive" broadcasting format that can be easily received on computers or hybrid personal computer-television sets. CBS will use an "interlaced" standard that's not as compatible with computers. NBC may use both. Both formats, however, can be received by new digital TV sets, which should be in stores around October.

Being flexible is crucial.

"We're going to start out with high definition in prime time and other stuff during the day," says NBC's Charles Jablonski, vice president of broadcast and network engineering. "Who knows what that may be. We have 220 affiliates -- any one of them may have a better idea."

Purchases of $15 Million Over Three Years Leads the Way in

Supporting MPEG-2 as International Standard for Broadcast Quality

Charting the wave of the future, CNN has announced its commitment to MPEG-2 compression and Sony for providing MPEG-2-based digital field newsgathering solutions over the next three years. Recognizing MPEG-2 as an international broadcast contribution standard, CNN plans to replace the analog field gear for its 150+ crews, serving all its six networks worldwide with Sony MPEG acquisition and editing equipment. CNN's first installment will include a large purchase of Sony's MPEG-2-based Betacam SX(R) equipment

"It was important for us to have a digital field format that is robust, to withstand the rigors of field production; flexible and interoperable, especially for pool situations; and lightweight, for saving freight costs when shipping machines for editing," said Scott Teissler, chief technology officer for CNN.
