Ashok Kumar,of Piper Jaffray, bearish stance on AMD now turns positive

On 4/1/98, Kumar said:
"For AMD it comes down to execution, and the
company has shot themselves in the foot so
many times they don't have any toes left,"
says Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Piper
Jaffray, whose firm didn't participate in
any of AMD's public offerings.

And Kumar sees a Compaq-like problem
developing for AMD once demand for these
sub-$1,000 PCs wanes. "Intel already has a
good percentage of this market locked up
with OEM manufacturers, so eventually AMD
will not have anyone else to sell its chips
to," he says. "All AMD will have is the
crumbs that Intel leaves on the table."

But Piper reverses its stance 180 degree today with this statement:
"NEW YORK, April 6 (Reuters) - Piper Jaffray said it
initiated coverage of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. with a buy
rating and a 12-month price target of $40.
-- among points in report said, "We have been able to
confirm that IBM (International Business Machines Corp.)
is indeed injecting capital into the company and plans to use
AMD as an instrument in its last stand against Intel
(Corp.)."

Are you turning bullish on AMD, StockMan and other shorters ?

I think there will be a torrent of upgrades after CC on Tues. 4/7. So far Volpe Brown, BA Robertson Stephen, Prudential, and Piper have BUY rating on AMD. Other pragmatists will follow pushing the price up even more. Cover your short now at high 20s or later at high 30s. The short covering coupled w/ momentum investors' jumping in, upgrades, and excellent future outlook & visibility will fuel the fire.
