" NEW YORK--IBM is launching a new consulting practice aimed at capitalizing on the shift under way in the media and entertainment businesses. "

news.com

" The (IBM) company also plans to announce contracts with CBS and Time Warner's WB Television Network. "

IBM's 3/18/98 press release announced a licensing of "ARM's" 32 bit RISC instruction set for 16 bit CPUs .

A 3/23/98 IBM press release announced new low cost 80 MZ PowerPC CPUs for under $30 enabling use in multiple dedicated (application specific ASIC) CPU configurations for "set-tops" etc.

IBM's CBS & Warner contracts focus on centralized entertainment processing . However the device du jour is a "set-top" capable of TV and DATA handling with entertainment capability .

IBM's TV consultancy seems timely but omits mention of plans of a application using a set-top device .

Any informed opinions ?
