My thoughts too.

I remember seeing Cyrix's chief CPU designer on TV sometime ago. I
may be wrong, but at that time it sounded like a small group of
just 4 or 5 people designed their CPUs.

So what are Intel's 12,000 researchers doing?

Intel was a monopoly for way too long. I remember talking once to a R&D guy guy working for another monopoly. He was telling me that there was no real research done even though huge amount of money was charged. The did not have to do anything by definition since they were a monopoly.

Intel is a similar story. Fat margins and no competition made - why rock the boat. AMD and NSM are smaller and hungrier. They need to rock the boat to survive.

NSM is now positioning to compete at low-cost computers and amd low and mid-range with high end by the end of year.

Intel got resources but right now Intel is playing catch-up for the 1st time. Intel's move to propritory interface was not succeful either.
