The article describes that they dont need the tape to be pre formatted for pivoting servo, but in the AMP media section they mention that the media has embeded optical servo information which is Pre Formatting of the tape, rather than magnetic it's an optical format, which could be more costly.
This sounds like a marketing gimmic.

Sam, to piggy-back off your comment, the larger capacity DLT could also negatively effect the sale of DLT changers. (One of the new tapes could handle the capacity of a current changer.)
