Latex allergies can be very severe. Severe enough to kill a person. In fact the latest numbers I can find report that there have been as many as 16 deaths directly associated with a severe allergic reaction due to exposure to latex.

outdoorbiz.com

In my investor packet from American BioMed I read an article on hypersensitivity of the vascular endothelium to latex balloon catheters. The most striking part of the article for us as ABMI investors was the following paragraph on balloon catheter allergic reactions:

Besides latex gloves, other sources have been reportedly associated with latex allergic reactions. Dillard and MacCollum report 15 deaths and over 402 injuries associated with latex allergy during barium enema examination. In a case report by Gosgnach et al., a patient who underwent pulmonary artery catheterization with a latex balloon catheter suffered life-threatening anaphylaxis. In another case study reported by Myers et al., cardiac catheterization of a patient led to development of anaphylaxis and was attributed to a pulmonary catheter with a latex balloon. Allergic reactions to urinary catheters and other latex balloons have also been reported.

This information was from an older article and the incidence severity of latex allergies has not slowed down a bit.

The FDA is now advising that warning labels be placed on latex products.

American BioMed's line of 100% silicone catheters offer a great number of competitive advantages over current latex designs.

Chief among those advantages is they will never provoke an allergic reaction!

GO ABMI!
