Dave, I would like to ask a question not really related to the ins and outs of technical analysis but still closely related.

I'm relatively new to technical analysis and my background was always skewed towards story-stocks and fundamental analysis. After reading few hundred of the initial posts on this thread I realized that you are very well versed in TA and that you use it for your trading decisions almost exclusively and that you have been doing this for a considerable amount of time. Thus the question is directed to you although everybody is welcome to jump in.

I have a question about the ultimate results of TA. I realize that there is a difference betweem trading and investing and that there is a variety of investing/trading philosophies but in numerous publications you can read claims about the superiority of buy and hold methods (Lynch, Buffet, ...) and statements like "lots of buy-and-holders are millionaires but hardly any trading types". Please, do not hold me to that statement, I am just trying to set the stage.

My question is what kind of return can be reasonably achieved over time by using purely a TA system with no regard for stories or fundamentals (other than the likes of IBD 70/70, CANSLIM, ...), i.e., without following news releases and annual/quartely reports. I guess I am just trying to benchmark myself against people and not against indices.

Thanks,

Peter
