Current Java technology is deeply flawed, but Java or something like it is the logical evolution of the interface between the various system components, information, and users. It will take a lot of cooperation among companies with conflicting agendas, or a strong enough push by dominant companies, to push this through any time soon. It is not in MSFT interest to push this now but if the industry starts to move they will have to be there with a leading set of products. This is potentially a big shift. Sun started out in the right direction but they don't have the stroke to finish the job. My guess is something like java but a little more integrated into the network and computer components will emerge in the next few years. Win98 is an example of where this is going if MSFT drives it - they will want to preserve as much market control as possible, and unless a stronger challenge than Java emerges progress will be slow.
