Sun from what I know never has taken a leadership position in UNIX or the SPARC
hardware designs. The usually shoot for parity if they figure they have to be in the market.

McNealy's preoccupation with Gates has been an ongoing problem for Sun since the early 90's.

JAVA has given them the most publicity and the least income of any of their major products.Sun has squandered whatever potential JAVA may have had as a result of McNealy's war with Gates.

Most of the original founders are now gone on to greener pastures.
this leaves Sun fighting a defensive battle to hold onto its UNIX and hardware markets
against the superior forces of Intel and Microsoft. McNealy's answer is to get the government to go after Microsoft.

At the executive level Sun is brain dead and lacks character.
