Think about IBM's position a bit: They helped popularize the PC but blundered when it came to capitalizing on it fully. That eventually led to problems and a restructuring as PCs, networks and workstations encroached on their corporate market. Now PCs and underlying uP, networking & communications, storage, and graphics technologies have evolved in the midst of a multi-billion dollar international biz(workstations, etc.), to develop the Merced, the first of a new line enterprise. Intel has worked with H.P., one of IBM's competitors for computing evolution. The Merced is aimed squarely right between the eyes of many of IBM's sweet spots in the market. They can no longer ignore the PC segment and treat it from an overall corporate perspective as a poor bastard son to their parent business. The world is a changin' and IBM could be up to their eyeballs in lower cost competition in the coming years as never before.

IBM has signed agreements with all of Intels' competitors partly to assure that they will have a play in shaping the future of mainstream computing environments. Now that AMD, Cyrix/NSM and IDTI have shown convincingly that it is posible to best Intel, it is a clear for IBM to want to take part in the conquering of new markets.
