a hardware problem-- maybe a sound card that isn't optimal for voice
recognition.

In fact, I just read the other day (and I'll be darned if I
can remember where) that many popular sound cards, specifically
the Sound Blasters (except for very latest) do especially
poorly with Via Voice (and to a lesser extent Dragon Dictate).
Whereas both of these can do quite well with other cards.
My memory tells me Turtle Beach, but I DO NOT remember for
sure, so please do independent verification if you're looking
for a sound card for these products. Also please tell me.
Some day in the next year or two I'm going to split for one,
I expect. Which is partly why I'm here now.

I have no firsthand knowledge of these products, but I've
followed the field from a distance with great interest for
many years. I am inclined to believe also that this is
possibly one of the next great technology breakthroughs.
Dragon in particular seems to be closing in on genuine
continuous speech recognition. Clearly a long way from
perfect, but now approaching feasibility, or so I conclude
from my casual reading.

Regards,

Spots

John, You need at least a pentium 233 and 64 meg of memory for DD to work optimally. Forget their minimum system reccos(133 +16M), they rae trying to broaden their sales. I bought the IBM and dragon dictate and use a 133 with 16M, dogsville, so I upped to 233 MMX and 64 M RAM. At this the Dragon preferred was better than IBM.You also need a good microphone with an inline amplifier(many SB cards do not give out enough voltage to operate a powered mike properly) You must also have a very quiet area to work in. Test it with a radio in the background. When the radio is 20% of your volume it will slow it down a lot. Even randon street noise slows it down.
