The pessimists cited Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto's comments as evidence of the negative economic outlook. Hashimoto said at a House of Representatives session Tuesday afternoon that he does not believe that the Japanese economy is on the verge of a collapse, given its foreign-denominated assets and foreign reserves.

''Investors thought the economy must be in a crisis to press Prime Minister Hashimoto to make such comments,'' said Yasuo Ueki, an analyst at Nikko Securities Co.
