No sympathy for those high tech folks who choose to live in the valley. They have made a choice to live in an area where a simple house cost 350K++. Actually I have found it to be more like 600-700K just to match a reasonable expectation of what you find in the southeast for ~200K. With those kind of housing prices it is real hard for even two well paid professionals to swing a mortgage. So if you stay in the valley, rent until the startup pays off, or move somewhere else.

On the topic of pay scales... Given that even 2yr experience folks can make at least 50K in this job market, with performers cracking into six figures without much difficulty... I tend to think Chaz's message was more sour grapes than anything else.
