But we see these concepts revived by many of the televangelists--remember Jimmy Bakker?--who encourage their followers to believe that if they've got money it's because God approves of 'em.

Janice, please don't take Jimmy Bakker and assume that all Christians have his views. I don't at all subscribe to the view that if you give money to the collection plate, then God will make you rich because of that. That's not a Biblical belief. God did bless Abraham and others like King David and King Solomon with very abundant wealth. So from that we can see that wealth alone is not "wrong" for a Christian. But actually, Jesus preached often against having your treasure in gold and silver, and he warned that rich people have some major obstacles to overcome if they are to inherit the kingdom of heaven.
