Asked about the stellar performance of the U.S. stock market recently, Guynn said, ''there is obviously a wealth effect.''

Guynn also said it was hard for the Fed to assess how much the gains in equities were fueling additional consumer spending, but he noted that higher
equity prices were a factor boosting consumer confidence to record levels.

''If there were further increases in asset prices, the impact it would have on both spending and confidence, that's our job to sort out,'' Guynn said.

In an answer to a question, Guynn also said he is in favor of mergers in the financial industry such as the one announced on Monday between
Citicorp (CCI - news) and Travelers Group Inc. (TRV - news).
