And what's not really noted in all this is that with all the notice they've been given, one could expect INTC to do the same, and possibly beat NSM to market. After all, INTC already owns or produces most of the "pieces" which go on the motherboard: Processor, bus chipset, DSP capability, Graphics capability (from CHPS), Communications etc. If it makes sense to fold all of this into one chip, INTC can do it too.

Interestingly, when MMX came out, I had a long talk about it with a cousin of mine who is at NSM. At the time, his take on it was that it just didn't make sense to put non-processor functions (especially DSP, one of NSMs strengths!) on the CPU, since it would result in speed bottlenecks.
