Yes, Janice, you are right that cucumbers gave new life to the Israelites once they had made it through the Red Sea. Of course, the bigger the better, I always say!!

Incidentally, did you know that the Old Testament tells us that Moses' one regret after the Red Sea parted and his people made their exit from Egypt was that he had neglected to bring a peck of cucumber seeds into the desert?

Israelits (and Egyptians too) ate this cylindrical green at every meal, usually dipped into bowls of salted water, for it was believed that the ingestion of three raw cucumbers daily protected the human body from the bite of deadly insects and vipers.
