LOL. Wouldn't that make us tied for 63rd place?

Yes, Todd, that's last place (there are 64 entrants).

To everyone:

The contest's web page <http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Lab/8821/contest.html> is updated. It loads really fast now.

However, the Java applet requires version 1.1 of the Java Virtual Machine, which is the little program that runs Java programs when your browser sees one. If you don't have the right version, it crashes ungracefully.

After some research, I found the following disturbing facts (not all of which are necessarily correct):

1. Netscape Navigator 4.0.4 and earlier contain only a partial implementation of JVM 1.1. Communicator 4.0.5 apparently has full 1.1.

2. Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 might contain 1.1, depending on when you downloaded it.

3. On the Macintosh, JVM 1.1 may not even exist yet.

The main difference between 1.0 and 1.1 in the case of the contest applet is that it makes the damn window scroll really nicely. So there are two options:

1. Update your browser.

2. Wait while I rewrite the applet (a few days).

Meanwhile, please don't e-mail me with requests to look up your standings. I have only a limited about of time to devote to this project. If someone with JVM 1.1 wants to volunteer to look up standings, be my guest. But please do it via private messages -- I'm sure the rest of the thread won't want individual standings cluttering the thread.

Welcome to the cutting edge of Internet software development. You're all unwitting beta testers.

(If anyone is getting it to work, please private message me and tell me your browser brand/version so I can confirm that it is a 1.0/1.1 problem. Thanks.)
