AMD earnings were so horrible analysts figure things can only get better from this point for them <g>...

CPQ, on the other hand, is only at break-even now, so things could still get worse...

Satyr...Must be a good number. Seriously, like I said, companies make money on $1.99 calculators. Who on this thread doesn't have at least 6 in their home? There is no reason computers can't be the same commmodity. I currently have two Pentiums, 2/486, & P laptop all operational and need more in my househoushold of 2 high schoolers, wife, & myself. That does not count the >486 machines sitting in the basement. I expect to buy at least two more machines before summer and they won't be high end boxes and will buy one of the 100 mgz buss units when they come out in the fall. There is a huge market for machines that are in the 200 mgz area. Add up all the old machines sold to date and %90 of them are probably less than half that capacity/speed and really need to be put in the landfill and their owners know it. At the same time there are plenty who will be buying the high end machines as I plan to do. I would guess most on this thread have multiple televisions. Heck my old 17 incher still gives a great picture, yet I keep buying bigger and better TV's or for that matter cars, microwaves, telephones, and yada, yada, yada. All the while the cheapo sub X $ widget sells at a pofitable level.
That is why AMD is up in after hour trading.
Steve

Satyr,

Sure I can explain it! A bunch of AMD shareholders got together after hours and one of them said, "hmm, I've got an idea. Let's totally screw up the short sellers who think (logically so) that amd should head to hades and put out a rumour that k6 chips are selling like hotcakes, because ibm, cpq, dell and everyone else is resourcing their chip requirements to amd. And remember, don't let anyone know that amd's cost to manufacture these wonder chips exceeds their selling price. That way, everyone will think that amd is a bargain, pushing up the stock price to the heavens and we can watch the shorters squirm."

At which point the remaining AMD shareholders began to chuckle among themselves and marvel at their collective brilliance.

I think it was on MOneyLine that AMD was reported to have announced an improved K6 chip. That and a plentiful supply would push it up some...
