The Compaq initiated price war of 92 was partly in response to Dell's pricing advantage and the fact that they were growing at triple digits and encroaching on CPQ's market. Hurting Dell was one of the primary goals. This from highly reputable management sources at both companies. Did you know that a lot of folks who worked for CPQ now work for Dell and live in Austin? I've got some interesting golf buddies.

CPQ would have had to initiate a hostile takeover to get Dell in 92 as M. Dell was not interested in selling at any time for any amount.

Regardless, the big 3 have been paying attention to Dell for years.
Despite what some may think, these guys compete with one another as
well as Dell so don't expect a gang-up. In fact, numbers show that it
doesn't matter whether one or all three target Dell in a price war...
they wouldn't succeed individually or collectively. They would however damage the industry and their own balance sheets.

but if CPQ, IBM and HP start to pay serious attention it will surely hurt dell.

If??? where have you been?
