I guess that I asked for this manifesto...

Stereotypes are still stereotypes. You are inescapably saying that Americans are lazy. Yet all *my* foreign friends say Americans work harder than anyone else. What do you say about us?

Of course I didn't say or infer that Americans are lazy. You talk to a guy from China who chose to start a completely new life in a culture completely alien to him. His motivation -- work very hard, provide for his (her) family, be rewarded for his contribution. Personally, I find these examples of risk and initiative incredibly inspiring. My experience has shown me many cases like this. Are Americans lazy? No. Are there many, many outstanding foreign IS workers that should be welcome in the US? Absolutely. Are they a threat to the fabric of our society? Absolutely not.

Train all those unemployed COBOL and FORTRAN programmers then - they are all wondering why nobody is calling for the year 2000 problem.

Done that. To be successfully retooled, the COBOL guy must stretch. Knowledge isn't just handed to you. One must work for it. Of my legacy guys, only 1 in 10 haven't made the transition. The only unemployeed COBOL programmers that I know have attitudes the size of Buick Roadmasters.

In the last 30 years over half of the middle class has moved down in many indices...

Egads! I thought we were talking about the marketplace IS skills!!?? My shoulders aren't big enough for all of society's ills. I'll now bow out of a dialog has grown too deep :-) for my very limited intellect!

Have a lovely evening Chaz!
