remeber that 3d and 3d+ are larger chips. Plant is still in conversion and who knows what else is at work there. PLus by the mid of the year amd would produce only ~4M chips which would imply that in the 2nd half they would have double the output with larger chips.

Actually, they claimed that there were only slightly more than 1.5M chips in 1Q'98, same as 4Q'97. I guess reality was that there were a lot more ads, but CPQ and IBM K6 machines sold out shortly after their allocations.

Good boy, you finally figured it out. That 12M figure was intended to fool the analysts and in particluar Intel. That way next Q, they could REALLY spring a surprise on all of us.
