I2,
There is no problem with using Reet-Talk to play tapes in a car, I frequently do this myself. I operate the unit off of the internal D-Cell batteries while in the car, the batteries seem to last long time (months). Reel-Talk may not work overly well recording in a car however, since as a radio, it does not seem overly sensitive. Reel-Talk measures about 6.5" x 6.5" x 12" high, there are provisions for headphones.

If you are in the market for a new recorder, a distinctly different approach would be to use a PC or Laptop computer to do the job. One could use a radio, the line input on your sound card and some recording software to record the show. 3 hours should take about 119Meg on a hard drive at 11K/sec, which is not very much by todays hard drive standards. You could use a laptop with a 12V adapter to play it in your car. Just an idea, haven't actually done it.

I'd be glad to answer any other questions,
Don
