BancAmerica Robertson Stephens said Tuesday that slowing order rates for analog semiconductors could indicate the companies face a difficult June quarter -- a quarter that is typically their strongest.

In a research note, analyst Arun Veerappan said March results for the group often serve as a prelude to the June quarter, adding that "while March 1998 started off strongly, orders began tapering off towards the end of the month."

"We anticipate that the slowing in order rates could affect the June quarter and dampen the outlook somewhat," he added.

Cited excess system inventory, slowing in the personal computer market and weakness in Asia as factors.

Said companies could enjoy resurgent demand in second half and recommended focusing on "proven players that are franchise names" listing Micrel Inc. <MCRL.O> and Linear Technology Corp. <LLTC.O>.

Micrel shares fell 2-3/16 to 35-1/2 and Linear Tech fell 4-13 to 65-1/8.

Among others in the group, Semtech Corp. <SMTC.O> dipped 2-1/4 to 22-1/8, Analog Devices Inc. <ADI.N> shed 15/16 to 34 and National Semiconductor Corp. <NSM.N> eased 13/16 to 22-7/8.
