"Chainsaw" Al Dunlap has never been a favorite of mine. You may have just uncovered one of his inherent weaknesses, namely marketing, and procurring the shelf spaces in stores. He'd better get his act together, because his stock is tanking. Ames' 10-K was released today, and is available on freeEdgar. Also this from Reuters on the future expenses AMES anticipates on the Y2K "bug".

Ames to spend $2-$3 mln on year 2000 bug
WASHINGTON, April 8 (Reuters) - Ames Department Stores Inc. said Wednesday that last year it spent nearly $2 million on a year 2000 computer bug plan and plans to spend at least another $2 million over the next two years.
Last year Ames spent ''approximately $1.7 million'' on its Year 2000 initiative and ''expects to spend $2.0 to $3.0 million over the next two years for conversion and testing of systems,'' the company said in its 10-K annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Rocky Hill, Conn., retail merchandiser said those costs include software, outside consulting and ''other expenses.''

It did not elaborate.

Ames said it expects to be year 2000 compliant by the middle of next year and avoid the bug that may afflict many computers because the systems record dates using only the last two digits of the year.

Such systems might consider the year 2000 as 1900, causing miscalculations, errors or crashes.
