Actually, when DVD was first envisioned, it was called Digital Video Disc as that was the application. The, other applications developed for the storage medium, music for example. So Digital Video Disk would not work, so Digital Versatile Disk was born. Both are still used frequently as most apply DVD as they want, or as their perspective allows (source: Popular Mechanics, some issue from way back).
