Sonki - Re: "is Deschutes compreable to starfire? how many users can it support??? "

The Deschutes supports 4-way SMP (4 CPUs) directly . Tony Viola described an new Intel "NODE" configuration that apparently groups several 4-way Deschutes into a cluster configuration.

As for SUN's Starfire - 40 CPUs in this implementation - their multiple CPU enterprise servers, along with their Solaris OS that supports up to 64 (I think) CPUs - these are in a zone that Intel-based machine can't touch right now. SUN is cleaning up in the big system corporate server market place. Keep in mind - these systems often cost in the 6 figure range (before the decimal point!).

Intel's Merced will be targeted at this market but OS support is required. Hopefully, SUN's Solaris will help out Intel.

Re:"When will M.Dell get his hands on it??? "

I would imagine Michael Dell - or one of his engineers - had working samples of the Deschutes last year before Thanksgiving. The Deschutes has been "live" since well before then.

Also note that Starfire is based on ULTRASPARC
(64 bit RISC )
and runs UNIX (no Wintel stuff).

Sun is committed to keep delivering on US even
after Merced kicks in.
