<<Trying to set up a simple office network between two computers, a printer, and a scanner. Have already tried a Belkin networking kit which didn't work. Any suggestions?>>

Only 2 machines? Are they both running Win '95 (or at least WFW)? Put Ethernet NICs in both PCs (make sure they support BNC connections), connect them with thinnet (10Base2 - 10BaseT requires a hub, which isn't needed for 2 machines) and run Windows network.

Direct connect the printer and scanner and share them via the Windows network. You need 2 thinnet "T" connectors and 2 terminators.

Voila! A piece of cake. If you will grow past 2 machines, use 10BaseT instead and buy a cheap dumb hub.
