>>> >>>Just how far does this alienation from the people around you go? Do you care if an Hispanic PC board cleaner in San Jose breathes solvent all day that will jelly his or her brain in 10 years, for 7 bucks an hour?<<< No, actually, I really don't.<<< Yeah, I saw that already. It was a rhetorical question. >>> Do you care? What's the Hispanic part got to do with it? What about other ethnic groups? <<< Well, it happens that the people most often stuck with that work are Hispanic. Sometimes Philipino. It's not like they have two of each ethnic group. It's not Noah's ark. This is in the paper here all the time, so I'm surprised you don't know it already. >>>What do you do about it? do you go down there, with your 3X market hourly rate and buy them air masks or ventilators? Why not? DO you care about the homeless people in your town? Do you talk to them? >>> Part of your knee-jerk politics seems to be making presumptions about people for which there is no evidence. This one is the usual - all the people who say they care about anything are hypocrits. Standard stuff. I've put in several solid years of volunteer work at one point, and still do some. I also donate money and agitate in the most unlikely places, like Silicon Investor's newsgroups. So in hours donated - maybe 8,000 or so. (Not counting argument like this, of course, before you leap to another bad judgement. Nor counting fun volunteering I do, like organizing user groups, artist coops, photo coops, and the like.) In money, what I can afford. As to the homeless, first I make a judgement as to whether they are likely to be dangerous. If I decide not, I would be as likely to speak with them as with you. I don't think this is unusual. Most of my friends have done as much or more. Many have been in the Peace Corps, which I have not. If I make enough money, I want to do a stint in the Corps after retirement. I'm sure this is way too touchy feely for you. So how do you spend your spare time. Make me happy and tell me it's something suitably evil! :-) Cheers, Chaz
