without prejudice sam. I agree with what you said about going to bed with dogs. Not quite sure what your getting at with the rest of your comments however.

Sam,

<<but I just see a kind of greed-driven mindlessness everywhere.>>

I tend to agree with the above in general. But I am trying to understand what differentiates me from the herd. I seek wealth also. In fact, I dedicate a goodly portion of my waking hours to the pursuit of money. Am I different (or better) because I read and write poetry? Am I somehow superior because I lament the decline of civility in these modern times? I used to think those BMW driving, Evian swilling yuppies were bad, then I came to Asia. Dear me..its like it must've been for a debutante to leave Boston and arrive in Dodge City by train 5 days later. but that, in a nutshell, is a reflecton of why I am here. there is money to be made here IMHO.

So what makes me different? Well...I got it... I open the door for my wife (and other ladies). Here it is appreciated some of the time, and illicits a sort of shock in others (its just not done). I also make sure that I say a friendly "Hi!" to the ubiquitous toll collectors here. Thats a good one. I score the responses. A surly stare is a zero. A friendly smile is a 2. A smile and a "Hi" back is a 5. I seldom have a 10 day.

To be sure the market suggests that there is a greed mentality underway, perhaps like we have never seen before. Does the existence of greed, by its nature, exclude the existence of civility?

And am I any different really? Maybe not so much Sam.

Best,
Stitch
