Intel's PC bus policy could take the industry for a ride

If Intel were truly serving as a standards-setting body for the PC platform, then the P6 bus would be open, too. That way, the best processor would win the processor slot in a PC just as the best graphics cards and network adapters today invariably find their way into the slots for peripherals.

That's how it works today in Pentium-class PCs. But Intel doesn't like losing sales in name-brand systems to AMD's K6. So enter the proprietary P6 bus.
