Mark -

AOL is rolling out a field trail in 6 cities for xDSL technologies soon. While most bears will argue that such broadband services will ultimately be the demise of AOL, I've argued that AOL will leverage its position and make such technologies work for them.

Whatever your taking about, xDSL, cable, ISDN, etc. - in their simplest form they are all simply means to become connected, just like a dial-up connection. What everyone is wondering right now is scale - what technology will become adopted as a mass medium, what standard will be used, etc. You'll be sure to see the same fiasco happen with xDSL similar to K56 flex and X2 technology.

As for WebTV and NC/thin-clients, CE devices, etc. AOL is in the loop. WebTV still hasn't caught on, and NC/thin-clients are still suspect and not widely adopted. If I were looking for competitors and threats, I would look more towards content aggregators on the net.
