We drove to CA from Boston. Oy. The same thing happened to me. We passed thru Death Valley at sunset, headed west. We cross the ridge, and there is a whole 'nother Death Valley spread out in front of us. (Map says it's the Panamint Valley. We nicknamed it Major Discomfort Valley.) The sky was as clear&dark as you ever done seen. Since it was March, the winter Milky Way was, like right there, dude.
