I remember being a kid and trying to spearfish a quarter. This back in the days when a nickel in the shopping center (predates malls) fountain was all pennies with the occasional hey-I'm-rich nickel. This was a quarter. A week's allowance. I had some chewing gum on the end of a wooden dowel, like for a kite, and I was trying to furtively snag the two bits. But - dangnabbit! - everytime my stick went into the water, the durn thing bent. The third try i lost my gum, and my manners were too good to just Wade for it.

LOL, eom. Yep - I know too. My object was a pair of light tan trousers half buried in the sandy bottom. So just one leg was coming up out into the current ~ half windsock and half dried up earthworm on pavement.

And the other half cadaver.

A person can almost drown in fear in those conditions.

(And what the HELL was it doing there, anyway? Huh? A CRUEL joke of the sea, ddamit.)
