(AMEX:HLX - news) announced today that its subsidiary, TDI-Halter, L.P. has signed two contracts for approximately $170 million for the construction of two DP-3 semi-submersible drilling rigs for Petrodrill Construction, Inc. The company also said that Petrodrill has an option for a third rig. Petrodrill is a joint venture of Brazamco, NV; Westville, Ltd. (a subsidiary of Pride International, Inc.); and Drillpetro, SA. The joint venture is providing its Amethyst II rig design to Halter for construction. The announcement was made by John Dane III, chairman, and CEO of Halter and Don Covington, president of TDI-Halter, who said, ''These are the first new semi-submersible rigs to be built in the United States in over 15 years. The fact that this experienced group of rig owners chose TDI-Halter to build these rigs demonstrates the confidence they have in our capabilities. With the signing of these contracts, TDI-Halter has nine new construction projects in its rig backlog; six drill barges, one jack-up rig, and two semi-submersible rigs. The combined resources of Halter and TDI-Halter are unmatched in the industry, and we believe that the combination makes us the premiere drill rig contractor in the U.S.'' Derek Leach, project leader of Petrodrill added, ''These rigs are committed under long term contract to Petrobras in Brazil, and we needed an experienced shipyard with the capability to meet an aggressive delivery schedule. These rigs incorporate the latest available technology and will be the finest rigs in their class in the world. We are pleased to award this business to TDI-Halter.'' The compact rigs, which will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 1999 and the first quarter of 2000, will be capable of drilling in water depths of 5000 feet. Overall length of each rig's two underwater pontoons will be 249 feet and the height from the baseline to the platform deck will be approximately 85 feet. Each rig will have approximately 3500 tons of variable load capacity. Halter Marine Group, Inc. includes 21 shipyards in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.
