In a way, I think the media making something an Event is perhaps a more insidious way into our skulls.

If the less-informed media and CNBC (who should have known better) hadn't made a to-do about Dow 9000, how many of us would have really cared? From what I can tell, most of those working on Wall St. weren't pre-occupied.

Instead of reporting the news, CNBC, et al, more or less created it. Part of that really bugs me.
