Compaq will use its Mpact's BuyWay secure-payment software and Microsoft Corp.'s electronic-commerce server software in powerful central computers called servers, which are sold to Internet-access providers and merchants looking to protect consumers' credit-card numbers. The agreement could boost Mpact's annual revenue by $20 million if Compaq, the world's largest computer-maker, reaches its annual target of selling 100,000 servers that include Internet software. Mpact doesn't expect any revenue from the agreement for a couple of quarters. Mpact will receive a licensing fee of $200 to $300 U.S. from Compaq for every server that includes its software, said Mpact spokesman John Davidson. Mpact will get $30 U.S. when an Internet-access company that buys a Compaq server sells an electronic-payment system to a merchant.
