The other advantage of doing more in one clock cycle as opposed to many clock cycles is this: You spend fewer cycles (as a %) waiting on memory and more (again as a %) doing actual work.

That's the reason why Cyrix chips perform so well, and it may well be a model for the future (witness Intel's Merced, it tries to do TONS in one cycle, as opposed to screaming around at 800Mhz).


The ideal thing would be to have a CPU that does a lot every cycle AND high clock speed. Merced will apparently have both. I just wonder how it will perform standard x86 instructions. I think it will be a while before the popular applications are rewritten / recompiled for Merced. The momentum will be slowed further by high initial prices of Merced CPUs ($2,000+ as was reported recently). I don't think Intuit will go out of it's way to get a Merced version of of Quicken.

You can buy the 400 MHz Pentium II TODAY and experience TODAY the power of the the "6x86MX core with a backside L2 running at .5 the core clock a 300Mhz 6x86MX (on 100Mhz bus)".

Just think - you can have that performance TODAY and when the Cyrix chip is available in late 1999, you can buy it at that time!
