Thomas, you do not have to be a Christian to believe in a perfect God who created the universe. This belief system is called "deism", and some of our American forefathers believed in it, including Benjamin Franklin. I am sorry this is not a very good url for Deism, but I am sure there is a lot about it on the web:

gramercy.ios.com

Each generation of adults teaches its exact religious beliefs to its children, teaching them to pray as soon as they can talk, taking them to Sunday school so that their belief system can be passed on intact, and telling them about how they see God and religion. That is why all the Muslims have little Muslim children, all the Christians rear little Christians, and so on. It would be natural that one generation after another would have the same beliefs, except for those children who break out of the mold somehow, or the ones whose parents believe each child should form his own belief system as he grows up and experiences life.

Who said anything about being an atheist? The rather likely existence of a creating entity is precisely what allowed people like Newton and Einstein to speak of God without feeling wholly hypocritical. Given the political and social dynamite of going against the powerful cults of the day, it's hardly surprising that such men amused their lessers by supporting whatever religion was convenient to them: Anglican for those living in England for example. Did you really expect your glib comments to mask the patently idiotic nature of these cult systems and their fairy tales? I sometimes wonder whether members of these tragic institutions have any real hope.
